主人公のウェルキンゲトリクスは、フランスの英雄となってる
ようだけど、今のフランス人の民族的な祖先ではないと思うのだが。

昔、読んだ時の記憶が正しければ、この映画はカエサルの『ガリア戦記』のエピソードをガリア人側から映画化したものである。出来はまあまあ。グレイトウォーリアーという題名からは主人公が敵をバッタバッタやっつけるような気がするが、そうではなく、主人公はガリア軍の総指揮官となって戦略・戦術を駆使してカエサルのローマ軍と戦う物語。

演出・描写・構成、観る側がある程度想像しないと繋がらない場面など多々有り、観るのが非常に辛くなる作品でした。
配信で観賞したのですが機器も余程辛かったのか良く途中画面が停止しました。

紀元前６０年代のガリア地方は、北はチュートン族、南はローマの版図に挟まれ不安定な情勢。
脅威に対抗するために諸部族を纏めようとしたアルウェルニ族の族長ケルティルは族長会議を催し、一致団結してローマにあたる必要性を説くが、密かにローマと結んだハエドゥイ族のドゥムノリクスとケルティルの地位を妬む弟ゴバンニチオによって謀殺され、諸部族は再びバラバラの状態になってしまう。
数年の後、ケルティルの息子ウェルキンゲトリクスは、ドルイド達の中で逞しく成長し、ドゥムノリクスを討って復讐の誓いを果たしてアルウェルニの族長となるが、ローマの勢力は既にガリア全土に浸透していた。
当初はローマ軍のガリア総司令官シーザーに協力してブリタニア侵攻に加わろうとするウェルキンゲトリクスだったが、シーザーの卑劣な戦略を目の当たりにしたことをきっかけに、亡き父同様ローマと対決の姿勢を取る。
ガリアの農地を焼き払う焦土作戦など、直接対決を避けてローマ軍を追い払おうとするウェルキンゲトリクスだったが、相手も戦略の天才ジュリアス・シーザーであり、とうとう雌雄を決することになるのだが・・・

基底となっている「ガリア戦記」は有名だが、本作はこれをガリア側の視点から見たもの。
謎めいた女性ドルイドから剣術を学ぶシーンなど、英雄伝説としての色づけもされているが、飢える民衆を見かねたウェルキンゲトリクスが有効な戦略であるにも関わらず焦土作戦を徹底できない様子など、歴史映画として解釈を試みている部分もあって見ごたえ十分。
シーザーとの２回の対決も、大量のエキストラを投入するなどスペクタクルとしての見どころのみならず、二人の戦略家としての心理戦的な部分が面白く感じた。
また、決戦を求めるシーザーとこれを避けようとするウェルキンゲトリクスとの間で、シーザーの幕閣として付き従うブルータスは脇役でしかないのだが、面白い役割を与えられている。
住民もろともアルウェルニ族の町アウァリクムを焼き払うよう命じられたブルータスは、不承不承これに従うのだが、任務遂行の報告の場面で酒を浴びるように飲み「無用な殺戮」だったと具申する。
シーザーの意図はウェルキンゲトリクスの誘い出しなので、非道ながらも戦略的には効を奏するわけだが、ブルータスのシーザーに対する反感の種が芽生える瞬間だ。
この作品の中ではシーザーの謀殺までは扱わないが、脇役であるブルータスのために設けられたシーンが、その短さにも関わらず歴史映画としての面白さを大きくしているように感じた。
この作品の中でのシーザーはどうしても悪役にならざるを得ないので、ウェルキンゲトリクスに感情移入することになるが、ガリア諸部族の纏まりの悪さにイライラさせられる。

主演のクリストファー・ランバートに大感激です。
何故なら主人公のウェルキンゲトリクス（フランス中部に
ある本人の銅像）にそっくりなんですよ。だからこの作品
には当然ハマっています。個人的に大好きな歴史上の人物
で「ガリア戦記」出てくるカエサル（シーザー）のライバ
ルです。敗戦し篭城すると、大抵は「降伏」か「玉砕」か
の選択を求められるのですが、彼は自ら進んでローマの捕
虜となり、ガリアの民衆を救った英雄です。彼に「玉砕」
と言う言葉は無く、ただガリア（フランス）の平和だけを
願っていたと言われます。ただ、作品自体は残念ながら、
人数・スケールなど大掛かりなのですが、作品全体のテン
ポは停滞気味なので、退屈する方もいると思いますので星
４つの評価にしました。ただ、人として彼の生き方はとて
も潔いと思いますので、歴史に興味のある方は、一度ご覧
になる事をお薦めします。

In direct consequence of larger events portrayed Romanized Latinized Frenchmen as such (still carrying same old consanguinary independent streak) had yet to entirely emerge, Gallic (Gaelic) people of these times & places justly represented just like Braveheart as Scots & Irish folk, well here & so they were, with distinguishing Tartans & your St Patrick’s Serpent horns & Gallic Sword as their Smith still trying to come near & decorative Celtic knotwork on his kid’s bed & a Whisgebarra shebeen cooking by a pile of grain sacks & what further authentications & quaint artifacts of life in the times as who should know but so far somebody did.

Roman kit visibly authentic down to last laces & out to every class of support weapon in their artillery train [incredible all what people on this production had the dedication to craft up just to be seen going by] with proper string guides laying out road projects & cows dragging logs & every real guys doing every real work raising & digging to improve every real working modular defenses, then every arrow sticking in every groaning/patient stiffs, every splash of gore that is there & every gum wrapper that wasn’t, every sigil on banner & brooch on cloak & fruit on table & chicken at large reflecting the personal consideration of someone there to look after those, as if who ever heard of such a thing as real work or would know about ever did any.

More or less relevant cryptic pronouncements given to Max von Sydow’s delivery fair as any to screen the incalculables liberating men of action to get on with your stunt, while thinking it over what we might find to offer any bloody more useful in their situations; Christopher Lambert levelly returning “Why not a King chosen by Destiny?” with Destiny summoned into anybody’s centuries by one man who came in from asking ‘Why not’. Lotta woman Sword Sister Rhia keeping warm in her generosities “Go to her---there will not be many more nights”, (impressing as the next country’s Sam Wanamaker) as Celtill behind B-P Donnadieu as Dumnorix (“Half the booty—that’s not enough for you?” “It’s too much.”) just go look. To be entirely historically just Caesar & rest of the Romans should be represented by a powerful Italian [like Giancarlo Giannini as Shaddam IV in SciFi’s DUNE] only to make this available to the expectations of a modern audience of our era the enemy of anybody’s France could only be a German guy, here Klaus Maria Brandauer delivering a charmingly urbane thinking man’s Caesar open to all approaches to gaining his way shun no danger shirk no labor & spare no blood if it had to be his or everybody else’s—Presently handing (as it were) his missions to the other man (received real through every gear in the box) to return & render unto Caesar how his latest charm offensive may be reaching a certain natural limit.

Principals carried on their shields all through by a revolving door of quality featured players expressing the popular spirit (the furniture people even having to hold themselves in to avoid stealing any scenes from 1sts & 2nds where this wasn’t intended) animating fore middle & background spare a glance to any figure among that lot digging their pits in the back all showing better interest in our work, & go tell people all about Theatre & Cinema. [Or go & engage the London Philharmonic in 60 BC] Music is good & right on the context fair to let you know when spirits are in better places, or events on ground about to take a serious left turn.

[Then knowing how there’s such a thing as Caesar’s Gallic History he was left to have written while still getting away with it] we could only build up so much ultimate suspense here, “I don’t want a battle, even if we win, Rome won’t rest &c” having this inflicted on him by the ungovernable enthusiasms of his insubordinates & seeing it all brought to worse just like he said it would, all right there you have me, whatever came out of our last Destiny Cookie trying too hard to leave your near & dear with something to carry on upon actually lames across as real as any This Wangs Chung to cover the occasions, anyone's real last testament was going out under the sky being who we were just because it’s what they can’t take, & hope to see it out to the last triple Lindy off the end of my plank.

[Funny thing about 'laughable'] then if that’s all these could do for you, maybe it wasn’t their limits.
